What To Do When You Find DNS Server Not Responding

Today’s world has been largely revolutionized by the introduction of the internet. There are wide implementations of the internet, which have eased the working of our daily life. The Working of Internet and Role of DNS

When you access a website on the internet, there is a different process that takes place before you can actually access the data on that site. These processes are necessary to ensure proper implementation of the service. These processes include recognizing the request, figuring out the destination address, accessing that address, fetching the data and displaying it back on the requesting screen. There are protocols, which define the working each of these processes. The DNS takes care of the first initial step of deciding the requested address.

DNS stands for Domain Name Service, which consists of different servers and services. The main basic job of a DNS is to recognize the URL entered and find out the appropriate IP address of the server hosting the site. The DNS server ensures that the proper IP address is stored across. The process follows as;

  1. You enter the desired URL like google.com, www.microsoft.com etc. in the search bar.
  2. This URL is then sent to the DNS.
  3. The DNS server runs the search algorithm in the complex hash table which stores the URL names and their respective IP addresses.
  4. The DNS server then responds to the network of the IP address that matches with the hostname entered.
  5. The data is then accessed from that site and diverted to the output screen of the requesting client.

The DNS server plays the important role of maintaining the DNS. Hence the problems related to the DNS server can crash down the entire network. The typical problem experienced by the DNS servers is the DNS server not responding problem, which is caused when the DNS server fails the search algorithm. What do we do then? Try these;

  • Restart the router

Reset Router

Disconnect the router and modem from your computer. Turn off both of them. Wait at least 10 seconds before you turn them on again. This will refresh the connection and might just solve the problem.

  • Configure your settings TCP / IP

DNS Server Hosting

TCP and IP are the protocols governing the communication over the internet. Configuring these settings will help a lot. To do so, head over to the control panel of your computer. Find the Adapter settings in the Networks and sharing section of the settings. Find your connection, which is typically the Local Area Connection. In the properties of the connection, find the ICPv4 properties. You will find the option to Obtain DNS server automatically. This will enable the internet connection to find the appropriate DNS server to process your request. You can configure the IPCv6 settings if your network implements IPv6 version for internet connection.

  • IPConfig from Command Prompt


The command prompt has the IPConfig tool for configuring the internet properties. You can access the IP settings via the administrator command line with list of configuration commands. Open the administrator command prompt and renew the settings with the following list of commands:

  1. Ipconfig /flushdns
  2. Ipconfig /registerdns
  3. Ipconfig /release
  4. Ipconfig /renew

This will refresh the DNS settings and hopefully solve the DNS server not responding problem.

You can also run the Windows Diagnostic Tools which will troubleshoot the network issues and present you the actual problem. Maintaining a DNS server requires proper security features to be ensured by the management system. Because tampering with DNS server can mess up all the internet traffic.
